Supporting the principles of product leadership competency, S-Ray follows the Market Driven Innovation process as a priority.
Market Driven Innovation requires that any and all products or enhancements must be reviewed by the target before development begins. This insures that any development costs have a basis in producing a product that can be sold. It helps prevent wasting capital to build products that “seemed like a good idea at the time” but could not be sold.
The primary ultrasound research and development is conducted at the S-Ray laboratory in Redmond, Washington, a suburb of Seattle. The communities of Redmond, Bellevue and Woodinville are known as the “ultrasound cluster” because of the cluster of ultrasound companies located there. S-Ray’s presence there allows access to expert ultrasound staffing, typically a substantial problem for ventures in the ultrasound device sector.
S-Ray has minimum staffing in operational roles, preferring to outsource or contract those tasks. This enables us to focus capital on product development. S-Ray intends to further outsource manufacturing, fulfillment and customer service roles on either a contract or partnership model.
Steve Baird – President & Chief Executive Officer
Since founding the company in 2008, Mr. Baird’s goal at S-Ray has been to commercialize the technology as a product which can be used in dental offices as a safer, faster, cheaper and better alternative to x-ray. He is very involved with the product development and has invented or co-invented over 30 patents for S-Ray. In addition to the patent portfolio expansion, he has also led the company’s product development.
S-Ray is Mr. Baird’s third posting as a CEO of an investor backed venture. His two prior CEO positions were at Comotiv, an online collaboration provider and Office Furniture Warehouse, an office furniture manufacturing company. He has also led multiple startups and turnarounds either as a principal, an employee or as an interim executive.
Mr. Baird has served on multiple non-profit boards as well as co-founding Northwest Adaptive Rowing, a non-profit that provided the coaching and equipment to enable physically challenged athletes (paraplegics) to compete (and win!) as rowers.
